Jessica L.
McElveen, now a
freshman at
Sandy Creek, was
diagnosed with a
rare pediatric
cancer during
the 2007
Christmas
holidays. At
the time of the
diagnosis,
Jessica was an
eighth grader
here at Flat
Rock. Doctors
at Scottish Rite
Hospital
provided a
diagnosis of
Desmoplastic
Small Round Cell
Tumor (DSRCT), a
rare cancer
where no
treatment
protocol has
been
established.
Jessica receives
an aggressive
form of
chemotherapy
that is
administered
during regular
visits to the
Scottish Rite
Children’s
Hospital in
Atlanta. With
much prayer,
this treatment
has sustained
Jessica as her
condition has
continually
improved.
During her
regular
appointments and
tests, doctors
determined that
Jessica’s
condition had
improved to the
degree that some
of the tumors
could be
removed. As a
result, in April
of 2009, Jessica
and her family
went to Sloane
Kettering Cancer
Treatment Center
in New York.
Her surgery in
late April was
deemed to be a
success, and the
family continues
to explore
treatment
options for
Jessica.
Jessica and her
family wish to
convey their
heartfelt
appreciation to
the Scottish
Rite Children’s
Hospital and
Sloane Kettering
doctors and
staff, family
physicians,
their home
church (Sandy
Creek Baptist
Church),
friends,
neighbors,
community
churches, and
the United
Community Bank
for their
support and
prayers. In
addition, they
truly appreciate
the support from
the Principal,
Staff and
Students at Flat
Rock Middle
School.
Flat Rock Middle School made it
possible for
this website to
be available for
anyone desiring
to inquire on
Jessica’s
condition or
provide support
and
encouragement.
Jessica and her
family ask that
you continue to
keep them in
your thoughts
and prayers.
